Born to a single mother, who he credits as one of his musical influences, Jones attended Overbrook High School. One of his other musical influences is singer John Legend.
Jones impressed the judges with his version of "Superstar" by Delaney and Bonnie, making to Hollywood. He progressed from there to Las Vegas where he teamed up with Richie Law on the song "Make it Easy on Yourself" by Jerry Butler but didn't make it to the top 24.
Realizing that they had made a mistake, the judges brought Jones back, and he made it to the top 13 as one of five top vote getters among the guys. Known for his very deep voice and his massive height(he's 6 foot 8), Jones was nicknamed "The Gentle Giant".
On March 13, 2012, fans of the show were stunned when it was revealed that Jones was disqualified for not revealing the fact that he had been arrested on two previous occasions, one of the arrests for a violent crime. Jones became only the second contestant, after season 2 contestant Corey Clark, to be disqualified for not revealing a previous arrest record.
Despite the disqualification, Jones's version of the song he was going to perform, "Somewhere Out There", was released on iTunes.
After his disqualification, Jones took care of his legal problems by pleading guilty to charges in relation to the outstanding warrents.
On the music front, Jones released his first single, "All Around The World", on July 19, 2012 on iTunes. He also took a stab at acting with a role in the independent film The North Star co-starring Jeremiah Trotter. Jones also said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that he intends to try out for the popular NBC singing show The Voice.
